On hand to receive the award were directors Linda Cooley and Adam Armit, and Lana Hamadej of Avalon Management. The award acknowledged the efforts of the board to maintain and even lower assessments while making improvements to the community, providing family community events, and their diligent work on water conservation. The award was presented at the annual CAI award ceremony. We are truly excited to announce that Avalon Management's Vice President Lana Hamadej was inducted into the Community Association's Institute Chapter Hall of Fame on Friday, December 12th at the Chapter's annual awards presentation. This award honors those Chapter members who have provided years of outstanding service and demonstrated a continued dedication to the Chapter. Hall of Fame recipients will have contributed substantially to the growth and continuation of the Chapter. Ms. Hamadej's volunteer involvement in CAI started in the early 90s, actively participating as a course instructor, seminar facilitator, Committee Member, Committee Chairperson, Board Member, Board Liaison, Chapter Secretary, Chapter Vice President and she has twice served as Chapter President. For a festive Christmas, plant red and white cyclamen, and/or poinsettias. The poinsettias are frost sensitive, so cover with burlap if the temperature dips below freezing at night. Continue to rake leaves, clean drains, and water only if Santa Ana winds blow or if more than 10 days pass without rain. Make sure that the soil is dry or you see stress in your turf before turning on irrigation. Do not prune tender cold sensitive plants. Before winter storms do too much damage, prune pines, oaks, and other deciduous trees of weak or cracked limbs, and open up the canopies so wind can pass through them. If the trees are big, hire a certified arborist to help; find one at www.isa-arbor.com. If plants get hit by frost, resist the urge to prune away injured tissue. The damaged parts will protect inner growth from additional harm should there be another frost. (Once spring growth appears, you can cut off damaged areas above it.) Over 60 Board & Committee Members from 40 Communities, along with Avalon staff members attended the December 5th Legal Seminar for updates on court cases during 2014 and newly adopted laws affecting community associations. Avalon regularly invites Board & Committee Members to educational events to enable them to make better informed decisions in their role as community leaders.
